The folks from Slackline Express will be back in town to put on another great slackline competition. This year we’ve decided to hold the comp on Saturday evening at Lander City Park from 5pm – 7:30 in conjunction with our “Free Pizza in the Park” event. Nothing better than free pizza, beer and slackin….Slackline Competition Rules
Freestyle – Single competitor

Scoring:

• Top 5 tricks scored + style points + crowd pleasing points

• Score is kept by judges who record the TRICKS successfully performed, the POINT VALUES, and any POINT DEDUCTIONS incurred.

• Each competitor’s total score is the combined total of the two judges’ scores. Style points are added to trick point scored and are based on smoothness, rhythm, coolness factor of combined attempts or boldness and for crowd impressions.

• Standardized scores include tricks from the following categories: Trick Scoring Sheet (PDF)

• Tricks not on the judge’s sheets will be judged from their best judgment of points compared to similar level tricks.

Time limit:

• Time limit is 3 minutes; if the competitor falls they may begin where they left off or from the start of the routine, time limit permitting.

• Time begins when a competitor steps off the ground. Undue hesitation to start will result in an appropriate time penalty.

Line:

• Line length and height are determined before competition by the judging staff with the input of the competitors.

• Line tension is adjustable; any competitor may ask to have the line tightened or loosened for their performance before they start. All feasible requests will be met at the discretion of the head judge or another appointed official.Props:

Props:

• The use of props i.e. juggling clubs/balls, magazines, etc is allowed but must be pre-approved by a judge.

• Relying on assistants to pull off tricks (such as throwing Frisbees or standing on shoulders) is only permitted with prior approval from judges. Tricks that are performed using outside help without prior approval will not be scored.

Prizes!!!:

• Top prize at the adult competition will be our brand new Evolution Slackline System – a kit with interchangeable mainlines. It comes with: 5/8” wide 50’ long, 1” wide 100’ long and 2” wide 50’ long lines. Second place will be a Primo 50 and 3rd place will be a Intro 30 kit.

• The first twenty competitors for the Adult comp will get T-shirts.

Safety:

• Spotters are allowed but null any trick where they make contact with the competitor for any reason.

• Available padding may be arranged as the competitor sees fit as long as it doesn’t restrict line movement or change the nature of the trick.

• Any judge may disqualify a competitor if they feel he/she is unnecessarily endangering themselves, other competitors, or bystanders.

• All competitors must agree to a liability waiver to compete. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign in person.

Other:

• All participants must agree to allow their likeness (photos or video) to be used in future promotions by the competition organizers.

Arno Ilgner distinguished himself as a pioneering rock climber in the 1970s and ’80s, when the top climbs were bold and dangerous first ascents. These personal exploits are the foundation for Ilgner’s unique physical and mental training program–The Warrior’s Way. In 1995, after a thorough search of the literature and practice of mental training and the great warrior traditions, Ilgner formalized his methods, founded the Desiderata Institute, and began teaching his program full time. Since then, he has helped hundreds of student sharpen their awareness, focus attention, and understand their athletic (and life) challenges within a coherent, learning-based philosophy of intelligent risk-taking.

Arno is back at the Climbers’ Festival this July teaching three separate “Warrior’s Way” clinics:

Since 2000, Mountainfilm in Telluride has traveled the globe educating and inspiring audiences and starting conversations with films from their festival. They have embraced the ethos of celebrating indomitable spirit and through their tour, have strived to incite change in global communities.

Mountainfilm has recently embarked on a new project that allows them to promote their mission while treading lightly upon the landscape. In June of 2009, they embarked on the “Zero Emissions Tour” – a 2,300 mile unsupported bike tour throughout Colorado, Wyoming & Utah. By illustrating how positive the tour can be with an almost total elimination of fossil fuels, they hope that their example will be a catalyst for action!

Mountainfilm presenter, Drew Ludwig, before he embarks on the Zero Emissions Tour

Beginning in Telluride, CO the route heads across Colorado, up to Wyoming, over to Utah and back to Telluride over two months. The plan is to average 50 miles a day so they can spend enough time in the host communities to actively raise awareness of the trip, the films and the tour’s sponsors. After hitting the TEVA Mountain Games in Vail, CO, the tour comes here to Lander for the Climbers’ Festival. Afterwards, they will hit up fibArk in Salida, CO and numerous points in-between. The entire trip will culminate in an industry bash in Salt Lake City, UT during the Outdoor Retailer Summer Show.

We are thrilled to be able to have Mountainfilm back in Lander again this summer for two more film screenings. We’d like to again thank Creative Energies for sponsoring our film festival and helping us bring these wonderful films to Lander.

Entry to both Mountainfilm screenings is free with a Climbers’ Festival ticket. Otheriwise the cost is $10 per show at the door.

Saturday Show:
7:30pm – 10:30pm
@ the Lander High School Auditorium
(come at 7pm to bid on outdoor gear in our silent auction!)

• Samsara - In the heart of the lofty, knife-sharp Vindhya Mountains in India sits a 6,500-foot rock route that resembles a massive shark fin and rises from the ocean of crags. This fin, which is twice as long as anything on El Capitan and just as steep, has denied many notable climbers from reaching its summit. In Samsara, all-star climbing team Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk set out to attempt a first ascent. Directed by Ozturk, the film is woven together with art, journal excerpts and still photography. Here’s the thing: The sacred peak, Meru, is said in mythology to be the center of the universe, but can you climb to the center of the universe? And that’s what Samsara—which means “wheel of suffering”—is about.

Samsara - Photo by Jimmy chin

• Bridal Veil Falls – For Erik Weihenmayer, a blind man, and Chad Jukes, an amputee, to ice climb is a feat in itself. To summit Telluride’s Bridal Veil Falls, the highest free-falling waterfall in Colorado, is even more notable. That the Trust for Public Lands finally succeeded in opening the falls to the public after innumerable challenges and setbacks, seems worthy of celebration. This short film tells both stories.

• Pickin’ & Trimmin’ - With the Walmartization of this country, small town America is changing quickly. This sweet and lovely short film about The Barbershop in Drexel, North Carolina, shows a bit of what we are losing.

• History Making Farming: Author on the Move

• And other surprise film selections

Sunday Show:
2pm – 5pm
@ the Lander High School Auditorium

• Look to the Ground – Imagine riding your mountain bike at full speed down a steep serpentine trail at night when the moon is a dim sliver that slips in and out of clouds, its vague light often lost in shadow. And now imagine that you’re wearing shades. Just such a scenario describes much of Bobby McMullen’s life: He is a blind mountain biker. Look to the Ground is his story.

Look to the Ground - Photo by Forest Arakawa

• Deep – Filmed in Japan after what appears to be a 100-year storm, this short is a melodic and meditative portrait of skiing powder—chest-deep powder. The film is stripped of the genre’s usual racket.

• Pockets - A locket, a spoon, licorice, a plastic spider, a ring, dog food, a Bible, a membership card, garlic…. What treasures are in your pockets?

• Home

• The Last Butcher in Little Italy

We are excited to announce that superstar climber, Joe Kinder, will be a featured presenter at this year’s Climbers’ Festival! Joe will be giving a slideshow dubbed “One Year Past” and running a “redpointing tactics” clinic up at Wild Iris. Here’s some info on Joe to get you PSYCHED!

Joe Kinder’s first climb was in Estes Park on a family vacation when he was 13, but it wasn’t until two years later, while living in New Hampshire, that Joe became fully overtaken by climbing. Known for his outrageous personality and infinite psyche, Joe is walking motivation. He eats, sleeps and breathes climbing…completely obsessed.

Cathedral Ledge’s coarse granite and the notoriously crimpy schist of Rumney, were the classroom for his climbing education. Growing up with some of the countries best climbers, such as Dave Graham and Luke Parady, Joe’s level skyrocketed. He became a professional athlete by age 20. He has traveled to many world renown-climbing locations in Germany, France, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland.

After Graduating from Maine College of Art with a degree in painting, Joe decided to pursue the sport fulltime and moved out west where his productivity and need for new terrain could be exercised in Las Vegas, Boulder, the Southeast and Salt Lake City.

Throughout his entire climbing career, consistency has been his forte. Joe’s personal climbing highpoints include Living Astro Glide 5.14d (Rumney), Living Astro 5.14c (Rumney), China Beach 5.14b (Rumney), Slaughter House Five 5.14c (The Cathedral in Southern Utah). Also a strong boulderer, his hardest sends include Child of the Storm V13 (Pawtuckaway), Serendipty Movement V13 (Bradley), Something From Nothing V13 (Great Barrington), The Centaur V13 (RMNP) and many V12s and V11s.

Joe’s accomplishments aren’t limited to hard climbs. He has helped develop areas in the Northeast like Rumney, Pawtuckaway, Great Barrington, Bradley and Farley. As well as areas in the West like the St. George area and Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park.

Joe will be presenting “One Year Past” on Friday night at the Lander High School Auditorium at 6pm. Admission is $10 at the door for those who don’t have ICF tickets.

We are please to announce that local climbing legend and NOLS instructor, Dave Anderson, will once again be giving the Wednesday night festival slideshow!

Dave has just returned to the States from a BIG expedition to the Piritas Valley of Argentina, a little-explored and remote drainage above the upper Rio Turbio, near the Argentina-Chile border. Dave and two other NOLS instructors, Josh Beckner and Jared Spaulding, completed a new route on a striking 3,000 ft granite tower in the Piritas Valley.

Josh and Dave take a look at the line.

The three climbers crossed Lago Puelo by boat and hired a gaucho to carry their gear 20 miles up-valley by horseback. From the junction of the Rio Turbio and Rio Turbio Quatro, the team spent a week hauling loads up the Rio Turbio, wielding machetes to clear the trail.

Once above treeline, they chose a line on Pirita Right and climbed Voces en la Noche (V 5.11 A0) in a day and a half. After 1,500 feet of “approach,” including several fifth-class pitches and a steep snowfield, they climbed cracks on the left side of the face to a sitting bivy four pitches below the top.

After summiting in the morning, they descended to the south to return to their high camp. Overall, they completed 2,200 feet of roped climbing, with only two pendulums to break the all-free ascent.

Back at base camp, the team loaded up two tiny inflatable fishing rafts and floated down the Rio Turbio to Lago Puelo, completing their 17-day adventure.

The expedition was backed by a grant from the Mugs Stump Award and support from NOLS.

Click here to see a short video clip from the expedition.

To see more photos and video from the Pirtas Valley expedition please join Dave at the Noble Hotel dining room on Wednesday, July 8th at 6pm.

Dave’s festival slideshow presentation is generously sponsored by NOLS.

It may only be early spring but there are opportunities for year round climbing in Lander. After coffee and breakfast burritos, Brian, Mandy, and I rode up to Sinks Canyon for a little post-holin’ and rock climbin’. We started off at the Scud Wall, a great wall for warming up. Some popular climbs on this wall include Duck Soup (5.9), Stud Alert (5.10c), and Boy, I gotta go (5.9 – 10a).

Mandy checked off her first lead on Girl’s Day Out (5.7) with ease, and then took on a Lander classic, More Funky than Gunky (5.9). Here is a short video that Brian put together recording this epic event.

P.S. We will have more videos soon. Check back often!
