Remember your first lead climb?

by William Roth on April 15, 2009

It may only be early spring but there are opportunities for year round climbing in Lander. After coffee and breakfast burritos, Brian, Mandy, and I rode up to Sinks Canyon for a little post-holin’ and rock climbin’. We started off at the Scud Wall, a great wall for warming up. Some popular climbs on this wall include Duck Soup (5.9), Stud Alert (5.10c), and Boy, I gotta go (5.9 – 10a).

Mandy checked off her first lead on Girl’s Day Out (5.7) with ease, and then took on a Lander classic, More Funky than Gunky (5.9). Here is a short video that Brian put together recording this epic event.

P.S. We will have more videos soon. Check back often!

My first sport lead was Go West Young Man (5.8) up at the main wall, I could top rope it so easily but my heart was racing the first time I lead it.

My first lead was a 5.5 (I’m a 5.9 climber), and it was so easy I could’ve crawled up it. Five bolts, maybe 25 feet. But what an amazing feeling.

My first lead was a couple years ago, Put Down Your Ducky (5.8), at the main wall of Sinks. I hadn’t thought of it for some time… so fun.

My first lead ever was on a really fun 27m 5.8, but even after top roping it so much the height killed me mentally. And now that I think back about it more I realize that I basically did every single thing wrong that I possibly could have done… Ah, good memories.
